One last sunrise along the River Genil. The morning was clear and I reflected on the important role that clouds play in creating a magnificent sunrise. It could be a metaphor for our trip.

Again, the commuters and kids were going about their Friday morning business moving past the things that were making me pause. There’s so much that we notice when a place is new, that quickly become wallpaper when we pass them every day.

This statue caught my eye… two men strolling towards the Alhambra. Quotes were stamped on each side of the metal plinth, with this one summing up how Rachel must have felt 23 years ago, and now I feel about Granada…

“Granada, which is loved before seeing it, and when you see it, you love it even more.” Emmeline Stuart Wortly, 1852

We packed up and enjoyed a couple more relaxed hours around the city. Plaza Neuva filled with tapas bars, government buildings and the Santa Ana church, and the enormous Granada Cathedral, somehow tucked away out of sight in the middle of town.

In a perfect transition, we found a tiny hole-in-the-wall coffee shop that sold Australian standard coffee and were delivered a salad that was an exact replica of my lunch every day. Little things to look forward to now that the trip is over.

I think Alexandre Dumas sums up my reflections on our time in Granada the best…

I’m beginning to think that there is an even greater pleasure than seeing Granada and that is seeing it again. Alexandre Dumas, 1846

And I know that Rachel feels the same way.

This has been an incredible trip. It’s been so good to reflect on Rachel’s life in the places that she loved, with people she loved and who loved her deeply in return.

I’m so grateful to Bonnie Bonne for sharing this journey with me and Rachel. Many memories rekindled, and many new ones made…

Love M & BB x
