Hola from Peru!

The GradyBunch South America 2018 trip is underway promising ancient sites, physical challenges, and plenty of llamas to keep us entertained!
This is our fifth GradyBunch travel adventure blog, following  Vietnam 2012, Europe 2013, Turkey 2015, India & Nepal 2016. We started the habit of daily updates via email during our trip to the US and Canada in 2011 as a way to keep family updated while we were away. This made us realise that while others might enjoy the blog, the greatest benefit is that we have a great record of the trip when we get home!
It’s interesting to reflect on how much things have changed over the trips. Alex turned 7 as we headed off for the first time, and was devastated that we weren’t going camping for Easter. She’s now just shy of 14, twice the height, and even more excited to be going camping in Peru. Emma has moved from primary school student to Uni, studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics… I suspect our travels have played a part in her choice of path.
Meanwhile, each trip has become slightly more adventurous as we get older, fitter, and more willing to take on a challenge. This trip will see us mountain bike through the Sacred Valley, hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, kayak on Lake Titicaca, camp, and explore Santiago. Throw in a few runs and it sounds like the perfect break!
We arrived in South America (Santiago) earlier than we left Sydney… Dr Who eat your heart out! We expected to be stumbling our way around in Spanish so I’ve been quietly chipping away at Duolingo for 10 min a day for the past 3 months. It claims I’m 46% fluent – it clearly doesn’t account for the pace that locals speak, and the lack of any English cues. All I can do is give it my best shot – this could be entertaining…
Late this afternoon (Good Friday) we made it to Lima. We’re looking forward to exploring tomorrow before we head into the mountains on Sunday.
Let the adventure begin!

love M & theBunch x
